Yorkshire Willow Baskets About

Coppice and Willow Work

I work with woodland materials and willow, following the seasons.

From Winter to Spring hazel and willow are harvested and used to make plant supports, arches and grow-throughs.

Summer and Autumn are about basket making. I make a range of functional frame and traditional baskets using the willow and coppice materials. These are made to be shapely, functional and strong, and the designs incorporate woodland materials to add organic textures and colours.

I also create unique, sculptural woodland inspired baskets, using wild and found materials.

In between times, I undertake commissions and make an occasional sculpture.

The hazel is from a local coppice which I manage along with my Yorkshire Hurdles partner Geoff Norton. I grow some willow and use some from Somerset farms where it has been grown for the industry for generations. My designing and weaving are done in my workshop at Westow Grange Cottage.

I have learnt my skills so far through experience, repetition, and dedication. I am currently enjoying studying for the City and Guilds Diploma in Basketry, learning advanced techniques, research methods and design skills.
